Description Estate Inventory (1851):
« Une broche formée d’un oiseau, tenant en son bec un ruban auquel sont suspendus deux cœurs, le tout composé de pavées de turquoises & diamants, les cœurs renferment des cheveux. »
The bird-shaped brooch was one of the rare figurative sentimental jewellery pieces Louise owned. The bird held on to two small hearts that contained the hair of two of Louise’s loved ones, namely her dear friend Victoria, Queen of England, and Victoria’s husband and Prince Consort, Albert. Likely, this brooch was made to celebrate this royal couple’s wedding, which Louise happily attended. Victoria and Albert exemplified ultimate marital happiness and achieved the kind of love that few of the nobility, including Louise, were granted. Nevertheless, Louise had no trouble to cheer for them and join them in their happiness. I too, the maker, want to participate in these rare moments of joyful togetherness. I even wish to give Louise what Victoria had found. Therefore, I am staging our own celebration of love, and in honour of it, I have refashioned this winged gem. We, Louise and I, pledge each other loyalty, affection, and friendship. We laugh, we rejoice and we adorn ourselves, by wearing this new jewellery piece, an eternal wing that holds my ring for her.
