The Friends series explores the various working mechanisms of friendship. The series sets off with nine jewellery pieces, which draw on the many jewellery pieces that celebrated Louise’s bond with Victoria. Louise and Victoria maintained their close friendship via their avid writing practice, as both Queens, who had obligations towards their countries, didn’t get to see each other very often. Therefore, this series’ jewellery pieces are cast in sealing wax, using medallion N° 265 as mould. This material sealed their letters and preserved the intimate nature of their conversations. Each piece touches on the different facets that typify the timeless phenomenon of friendship. Bracelet N° 186, for instance, examines how we value groups of friends differently than one-to-one friendships. Bracelet N° 198 and medallion N° 263 visualise how everyone yearns for ‘togetherness’, wants to (be)long. In turn, bracelets N° 219, N° 227, N° 228 as well as ring N° 253 play with the various styles in which we attach ourselves to the other. Ring N° 257 explores how friendship differs from romantic love, and in what ways the latter can interfere with the former. Finally, ring N° 260 hopes to draw attention to ‘friendsickness’, a theme that, unlike lovesickness, often remains underexposed and therefore also undebated. Ultimately, this Friends series leaves the possibility to keep expanding itself with new jewellery pieces – just as our circles of friends keep on welcoming new friends.
